Earthdance is a global festival dedicated to promoting peace. Originally begun in 1997, Earthdance has grown into a worldwide phenomenon with over 300+ locations in 60 countries. Synchronized on a single date, the feature of Earthdance is a single track, called the "Prayer for Peace" that is played at the same time at all the festivals, regardless of timezone. The uniqueness of Earthdance comes from this synchronization, where participants can know that millions of people around the world are participating in the same event for the same purpose. Bringing together music, activists, artists, and religious leaders from all traditions and styles, Earthdance is a grass-roots event unlike any other. From the Earthdance Website: Earthdance was conceived in 1996 by artist/musician Chris Deckker, as a vision to unite the whole world through the universal platform of dance and music. Earthdance has now become the largest global synchronized dance event in the world. What began in 1997, with 22 cities in 18 countries has now occurred in over 360 locations with over 300 locations in 60 countries participating in 2007 alone! Rising out of the global electronic music scene, Earthdance has now grown to include a diverse cross-section of musical genres including world music, jazz, conscious hip-hop, folk and reggae. Earthdance has shown how the potent combination of music, dance and technology can be harnessed for positive and humanitarian aims. For one night all around the globe, people join together to dance as one global community, united with a common vision for peace and humanitarian aims. Every year, Earthdance continues to grow in volume and scope. This year we are gearing up to include as many people on the planet as possible through a number of new initiatives and by making the Prayer for Peace track available to everyone. Our objective is to create as many Earthdance events around the world as possible. From public stadium concerts to private living room gatherings, there are no conditions on how big or small an event has to be. The spirit of Earthdance is participation on whatever level possible. In the spirit of "Think Global, Act Local," each local promoter must donate at least fifty percent of their profits to a local charity related to one of the following categories: The Welfare of Children & Urban Youth, Indigenous Peoples, International Relief and Development, Environmental Sustainability & Protection, and Organizations that help Promote Peace. Each promoter also commits to include that charity in their event by giving them space to display information, and time to speak at the event. |
